Hackett Upsets Hoogie To Win 200m Free at Melbourne World Cup

MELBOURNE, December 7. GRANT Hackett, the greatest distance swimmer in history, proved he's not too shabby when it comes to a 200 meter "sprint," as he upset 2000 Olympic 200 meter champion Pieter van den Hoogenband to win the event at the World Cup meet here today.

Hoogie took an immediate lead and turned first at the 100 meter turn, but Hackett shifted gears in the third 50 and had the lead by the 150. From there, he just kept going, pulling away from the Dutchman to win in a superb 1:42.48, 7-tenths ahead of Hoogie but well shy of Ian Thorpe's 1:41.10 world record.

"When you're racing someone like Pieter, it's like racing someone like Ian," said Hackett, who briefly held the 200-meter long course world record in 1999 before Thorpe established his reign.

"Every race between now and the Olympics counts and if you come up against guys like that, you've got to take the opportunities to race them."

With Thorpe choosing to skip the race, van den Hoogenband was the overwhelming favorite to win the 200 after he flirted with the 100 meter world mark yesterday. But Hackett, racing with a thick black beard, had plans of his own.

"That's why I came all this way — to get good competition," Hoogie said. "Unfortunately tonight it was a bit too good."

Germany's Thomas Rupprath collected his third win in two nights when he followed up his victory in the 50 back yesterday with triumphs in the 50 fly and 200 IM today.

His winning time of 1:56.41 for the medley was a national record and the fastest in the world this year. Italy's Massi Rosolino, the Olympic champ, was a badly beaten second, four seconds behind the German.

Sweden's Emma Igelstrom set a European record in becoming only the second woman to break 2:20 in the 200m breaststroke. Igelstrom clocked 2:19.85, a second off the world mark of 2:18.86 set last week by China's Qi Hui. Last year Qi broke through the 2:20 barrier with her 2:19.25. Australia's Leisel Jones was second tonight in a Commonwealth/national record 2:20.89.

Elka Graham set an Aussie mark, out-dueling the USA's Lindsay Benko in the 400 free. Graham, who won the 200 yesterday, touched in 4:01.17 to Benko's 4:02.98. In the 2001-02 World Cup, Benko swam the event in 4:00.30, history's second-fastest 400.

Dave Denniston was one of two Americans to win tonight, picking up his first gold medal of the tour. And he did it the hard way — beating world record-holder Roman Sloudnov of russia in the 100m breast, 59.20 to 59.45.

Rachel Komisarz had the other U.S. win as she clocked 58.67 to take the 100m fly.

Britain's Steve Parry picked up his second win here, taking the 200m back in 1:54.31 after Australia's Matt Welsh was disqualified once again.

Sweden's Therese Alshammer won the women's 50 free in 24.58, swimming the last lap without taking a single breath, to add to her 50 fly win last night.
