FLASH!! Coughlin Breaks American Record in the 200 Free

By Phillip Whitten

AUBURN, Alabama. THE amazing Natalie Coughlin continued her reign of terror, breaking a 10 year-old American record at the Auburn Invitational a few minutes ago.

Coughlin, who set short course yards marks last season in the 100 free, 100 and 200 back and 100 fly, split 50.44 at the 100 tonight on her way to an incredible 1:42.65 for the 200 yards freestyle.

Her swim broke the American record of 1:43.28 set by Nicole Haislett on March 20, 1992. The US Open mark was 1:43.08 set by Martina Moravcova on March 21, 1997.

The swim was not a complete surprise after Coughlin's 4:37.62 in the 500 last night, but it is all the more impressive considering she is neither rested nor shaved.
