Joyce Lowers Her Own National High School Mark in the 100 Free -- November 23, 2002

EASTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY, Nov. 23. YESTERDAY Kara Lynn Joyce of Pioneer High in Ann Arbor burst through the 49 second barrier to set a national interscholastic record of 48.69 seconds for the 100 yard freestyle. The time was swum in the prelims of the Michigan State High School Championships.

Today, Joyce led Pioneer to its third straight Michigan high school title as she lowered her own mark in the 100 free to 48.59. Her split was 23.39.

The Georgia-bound Joyce also set a new state mark in the 200 free at 1:46.34, but she missed breaking Sippy Woodhead's national high school record of 1:45.98. Joyce's splits: 24.50 - 51.46 - 1:19.01 - 1:46.34.

yesterday Joyce led off her team's national record-setting 200 yard free relay in 22.04. Today, she could manage "only" the second-fastest high school time in history, 22.16 as the team clocked 1:33.71. Pioneer was also about a second slower in the 400 free relay but still won in 3:26.96.
