Wisconsin Signs 10

MADISON, Wisc., November 21. THE Wisconsin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams signed 10 swimmers to national letters of intent during the November early signing period, according to head coach Eric Hansen. The 10 new Badgers, four men and six women, will join the squad in 2003.

“We are real pleased with our recruiting class and we’ll continue to add a few more in the spring,” Hansen said.

On the men’s side, the Badgers gain Matt Bonzer (Grand Forks, N.D.), Scott Speer (Fitchburg, Wis.), Chris Scheuber (Papillion, Neb.) and Darren Volle (Springfield, Ill.)

“We are going to add some strength and power in Darren Volle, Chris Scheuber and Scott Speer. All are accomplished 50 and 100 sprinters and we’re looking to add some depth to that,” Hansen said. “Matt Bonzer is an IMer who we think can develop into something special.”

Bonzer hails from Central High School and Volle is a high school All-American and two-time all-state from Springfield High School. Scheuber and Speer are state champions in the 100 freestyle at Papillion-Lavista and Madison West, respectively. Scheuber is also a
two-time Nebraska state champion in the 50 free.

On the women’s side, the Badgers add Caroline Ackley (Raleigh, N.C.), Susan Johnson (Toledo, Ohio), Sierra Lewis (Bend, Ore.), Amanda Rice (Jacksonville, Fla.), Tina Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) and Andrea Wiesner
(Montrose, Colo.). Johnson, Lewis and Rice are senior national qualifiers from Notre Dame Academy, The Bolles School, and Summit High School, respectively.

“We will put [Lewis] to work in the relay spots and also in the 100 and 200 breast. She is a great talent. Amanda Rice is a distance freestyler who we think can really help us out. She will help us with depth in addition to Carly [Piper] and Rebecca Johansson,” Hansen said. “Susan Johnson’s versatility is quite amazing. She will help us reload in the middle distance freestyle. She will help us in the 400
free relay and will also help us in the butterfly and backstroke events.”

Enloe High School product Ackley and Montrose High Schooler Wiesner are sisters of current men’s swimmers Andrew and Eric, respectively. Wanezek is the sister of former Badger Andrea Wanezek. Wanezek recently
took third in the 100 fly at the Wisconsin state meet swimming for Brookfield East.

“We are excited to have [Wanezek] and she has proven to be very successful in the fly events. Ackley comes to us as a substantial contributor in the middle distance freestyles. Andrea Wiesner is an amazing talent who we feel can help us in the IMs,” Hansen said.

“The combination of Andrea Wiesner, Anna Trinidad, Emily Pisula, and Bethany Pendleton should really make us a threat in the IM events.”
