Texas Freshman Dusing Breaks Own School Record in 100 Yard Butterfly At 1998 Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships

From UT – COLLEGE STATION, TX – The No. 3 ranked University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team won four of eight events on Friday night to extend its lead over second-place Nebraska to 617-468.5 after the second of three days at the 1998 Big 12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium.

Freshman Nate Dusing (Villa Hills, Ky.), swimming unshaved, won the 100-yard butterfly with a career-best time and NCAA automatic standard of 47.03, breaking the school record he set on Dec. 5, 1997 (47.15). Dusing defeated the 1997 NCAA Championship runner-up and defending Big 12 Champion, Nebraska’s Adam Pine, who was second with a time of 47.18. It was Dusing’s second individual win of the championship meet, as he recorded a victory in the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday night. Senior Steve Martyak (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) was third with a career-best time and NCAA automatic standard of 47.58.

The Longhorns recorded a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100-yard backstroke, as senior Neil Walker (Verona, Wis.) led the way with a first-place time and NCAA automatic standard of 47.22. Freshman Matt Ulrickson (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was second with a 48.71, senior Carlos Arena (Mexico City, Mexico) was third with a 48.94, and Martyak was fourth with a 49.24. Ulrickson, Arena, and Martyak each posted the NCAA consideration standard.
