Delta State Falls to Alabama, Southwest Missouri -- November 17, 2002

CLEVELAND. Miss., Nov. 17. FOR the second time this fall season, Delta State University stepped up its competition, swimming a double-dual meet against the
University of Alabama and Southwest Missouri State on Saturday.

The Statesmen fell to Southwest Missouri 94-39 and to Alabama 110-23. Alabama defeated SMS 91-42.

On the women’s side, Southwest Missouri earned a 113-20 win and Alabama a 107-25 win over the Lady Statesmen. Alabama was a 94-39 winner over SMS

DSU’s Jared Woodford swam an NCAA B-cut time 16:44.89 in the Men’s 1650-Freestyle.

Selin Kokce set a new DSU team record with a 4:45.06 in
the Women’s 400-Individual Medley.

Bob Phipps’ 4:43.21 was a season best in the 500-Freestyle.

Overall 13 DSU Aquatic Center Records fell, 11 by the Crimson Tide and two by SMS. Candace Weiman (UA) set two pool records in the 100-Breaststroke (1:04.90) and the 200-Butterly (2:01.57 – NCAA I B-Cut).

Anna Grant’s (UA) 59.13 was a new pool record in the
100-Backstroke. Spiros Bitsakis (UA) set a new pool record in the men’s 200-Freestyle with a time of 1:39.38.

Catilina Casaru (UA) swam a 4:30.70 for a new record in the women’s 400-Individual Medley. Lane Basham (UA) set two pool records in the women’s one-meter (295.20) and three-meter (335.15) diving.

2002 NCAA Division I 200-Butterfly Champion, Stefan Gherghel (UA), was as good as advertised with an
Aquatics Center record 1:49.61 in the 200-Butterfly.

Stewart Smith (UA) scored a pool record 340 points in the men’s three-meter diving. Anne Poleska (UA) posted a 2:16.66 to set the women’s 200-Breaststroke mark and Vladislav Polyakov (UA) made it a sweep in the men’s 200-Breaststroke with a 2:01.88.

Southwest Missouri’s two records were set by Phillip Courtney in the 1000-Freestyle (10:30.19) and Brandon Pienaar in the men’s 400-Individual Medley (4:03.22).

Delta State returns to action when it hosts the DSU/Christmas Invitational on December 18-20.
