Men's Water Polo: Long Beach State Upsets Pepperdine, 8-6 -- November 17, 2002

MALIBU, November 16. SOPHOMORE two-meter man Erik Geoffroy scored five goals to help lead No. 10 ranked Long Beach State to an 8-6 win over No. 4 Pepperdine here this afternoon.

The match was a non-conference game played at the Waves' Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

Long Beach State completes its regular-season with a 15-14 record, while Pepperdine finishes at 14-9. The loss spoiled the final home game for six Pepperdine seniors.

Both teams will begin preparations for the nine-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament scheduled for Nov. 29-Dec. 1 at the USA Water Polo National Aquatic Center in Los Alamitos.

Pepperdine will be the No. 1 seed at the three-day MPSF Tournament by virtue of having won the regular-season conference title with a 7-1 league mark.

The Waves will face the winner of the play-in game between Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara on November 29 beginning at 6:30 PM

If Pepperdine wins its first round game, the Waves will advance to a semifinal round contest Nov. 30 against either No. 4 seed USC or No. 5 seed UCLA, beginning at 6:30 PM

The winner of the MPSF Tournament earns the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships scheduled for Dec. 7-8 at Loyola Marymount in Westchester, CA., a Los Angeles suburb just north of LAX.
