HYMAN SETS WORLD FLY RECORD -- December 1, 1996

American Misty Hyman, 17, smashed the world record in the 100 meter butterfly (short course) today at the Canadian Open Swimming Championships in Quebec City. Using her patented underwater start and turns, Hyman, a high school senior in Phoenix, Arizona, clocked 58.29 seconds for the four-lap race.

What a difference a year makes! The previous world record, 58.68, was set by China's Liu Limin at the World Short Course Championships last December 2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In that race Hyman placed fifth in 59.71.
