NCAA Div. I Women: Kansas Beats Wyoming, Southwest Missouri State; SMS Men Down Wyoming

LAWRENCE, Kansas, Nov. 9 IN its first home meet of the season, the University of Kansas Lady Jayhawks defeated Wyoming 78-35 and Southwest Missouri State(SMS) 75-20 today. There was no men's meet for Kansasas KU abolished its men's team two seasons ago in a coordinated move by the athletic directors at KU, Nebraska and Iowa State.

However, the SMS and Wyoming men met in a dual meet won by the SMS Bears, 147-94, improving their record to 3-0 on the year.

Today's wins for Kansas move the Jayhawks to 3-1 overall in dual meet action this season. The Jayhawks posted 13 first-places finishes en route to the victories.

The meet was highlighted with 21 season-best times. Beth Schryer led Kansas in the 1000 freestyle clocking in at 10:28.75. Amy Gruber finished first in the 200 freestyle with Gina Gnatzig second.

Ashley Dower and Aly Colver went 1-2 in the 50 freestyle with times of 24.61 and 24.75, respectively. Dower also finished in first place in the 100 freestyle (53.37).

risten Johnson won the 200 IM and the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:08.00 and 2:21.64, respectively.

Gwen Haley captured first place in the 200 butterfly with Heidi Landherr coming in second place. Landherr and Julie Ottmar went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke after both finished in season best times. Gnatzig took first place in the 500 freestyle after clocking in at 5:03.54, over four seconds faster than second place.

"Ashley Dower and Heidi Landherr were both our program's swimmers of the meet," said coach Clark Campbell. "They were both amazing today. Heidi's four in-season best times were amazing."

In diving action, Kansas Patti Stringham won both the one-meter and three-meter competitions after scoring 240.55 and 269.35 points, respectively. This puts her five points away from qualifying for the NCAA Zone Diving meet. Kristi Misejka placed in second in both flights, with Tayler Eldridge finishing in third in both events.

"For the training we did this week in practice and this morning, I am amazed at how many good swims we had today," said Campbell. "We had an outstanding week of practice, and I am pleased with how we raced. This should put us right on target for a good North Carolina Invitational."

In the men's meet between Southwest Missouri and yoming, the SMS Bears won eight events including two each by freshman Matt Beasley and senior Johnathan Waldon.

Beasley won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.60 and the 500 free at 4:37.77. Both are SMS bests this season. Waldon continued his dominance in diving taking both boards for the second consecutive weekend.

Other victories were by senior Eric Bintner in the 1000 free (9:34.33), junior Miro Majorahn in the 50 free (21.61), sophomore Raichin Antonov in the 100 free (47.58) and the combination of Majorahn, Eric Ertl, Micah Osborne and Beasley in the 200 free relay (1:25.08).
