Swimming Extends Its Lead in Oregon Voting

By Phillip Whitten

EUGENE, Oregon, November 5. SWIMMING extended its lead in the voting on the University of Oregon web site to add a new women's sport to the University's athletic offerings. Encouragingly, Water Polo has overtaken Gymnastics for the second spot.

The current vote totals are as follows:

1. Swimming & Diving – 34.3% (202,730 votes)
2. Water Polo – 32.7% (193,647 votes)
3. Gymnastics – 32.4% (191,903 votes)
4. Lacrosse – 0.2% (944 votes)
5. Rowing – .0.1% (853 votes)
6. Ice Hockey – 0.1% (742 votes)

Accotrding to several informed sources, the voting should now be over. However the U of O web site continues to accept votes, so Swimming's supporters need to keep voting.

The web site asks readers:
What current NCAA women's sport would you like Oregon to add?(No. of schools sponsoring sport in parenthesis)

This is no time to become complacent. We are winning this vote, but we must keep the pressure on. If you care about the future of our sport, we need you to vote and encourage your friends to vote!

This vote is significant because it was former Oregon A.D., Bill Byrne, who killed both the women's and men's swim teams. After he moved to Nebraska, he proceded to kilL men's swimming at that university as well. So reinstating the women's program at Oregon would have additional symbolic significance.

You can help further by passing this article along to five friends and asking them to vote.
