NCAA Div. II: Delta State Sweeps Springhill -- November 3, 2002

CLEVELAND, Miss., Nov. 3. THE Delta State swimming and diving team opened the 2002-03 home schedule with a pair of wins over Springhill College on Saturday.

The meet marked DSU Swimming’s annual Parents and Alumni Day as the Statesmen (1-3) earned a 141-50 win. The Lady Statesmen (1-2) had similar success with a 108-70 victory.

Delta State’s men captured first place in the first nine events before dropping the final two events: the 100-Breaststroke and the 400-Free Relay. The women won seven-of-11 events enroute to their victory.

Justin Whitaker swam an NCAA Cut 51.61 in the backstroke leg of the 400-Medley Relay as he teamed with Onurkan Guvensel, John David Deville and Josh Smith to win the event. Whitaker also took the 100-Backstroke (52.59).

Chris Edmaiston swam 10:13.93 to win the 1000-Free. Jared Woodford won the 200-Free (1:45.31). Freshman Josh Smith won the 50-Free (22.08).

Deville captured the 200-Individual Medley (1:59.68) and the 100-Butterfly (53.24). Tripp Davis won the 100-Free (48.77). Bob Phipps wont he 500-Free (4:44.50).


Jenny Rogers, Kristen Demoruelle, Karly Williams and Shelley Baker teamed to win the Women’s 400-Medley Relay. Sophomores Ashley Droke and Nilay Aydin
continued their winning ways in the 100-Free (11:13.06) and the 200-Freestyle (2:00.79) respectively.

Aydin also won the 100-Butterfly (1:02.53). Baker swam a 55.80 to win the 100-Free.

The Statesmen and Lady Statesmen return to the pool when they travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., to swim Ouachita Baptist on Friday at 3 p.m. and Henderson State on Saturday at 10 a.m.
