NCAA Div. I: Clemson Takes Two from Charleston

SPARTANBURG, So. Carolina, Nov. 1. THE Clemson men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their home season with a dual meet win over College of Charleston Friday night at the Spartanburg Middle YMCA. The men's team took a 126-73 victory, while the women's team defeated the Cougars 119-76.

Jenna Burtch led the way for the women's team with victories in the 50 free and 500 free. Her times were 24.08 and 5:10.63, respectively, for the two events.

Ashley Shafer took the 100 free with a time of 54.28 and Nichole Carlton's first-place time of 1:56.03 in the 200 free led a Clemson sweep of the top three finishers in the event.

The Tigers also swept the top three spots in the 100 fly, led by Lindsey Kroeger's time of 57.65. Aurelie Gressett captured the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.81 and Allison Gjervold took the 1000 free with a time of 10:35.33.

The 200 medley relay team of Kroeger, Burtch, Elise Thieler and Sarah Keyes took the last of the women's victories with a time of 1:48.80.

Buddy Reed led the men's team with a pair of victories. He finished the 100 back in 52.17 and the 200 IM in 1:57.06. Drew Scheerhorn's time of 21.63 in the 50 free edged out teammate Brent Hitchcock by .06 seconds for victory. Robert Kummer and Joshua Williams took third and fourth in the event also.

Williams followed up with a time of 47.78 and victory in the 100 free and Charlie Dillion's time of 1:44.79 was .03 seconds better than teammate Derrick Mulder for first place in the 200 free.

Jordan Raynovich finished the 1000 free in 9:59.05 to as Clemson took the top four spots in that event. The Tigers took the top three spots in the 100 fly, led by Thomas Rappold's time of 51.03 and Clemson's 200 medley relay team of Mulder, Rappold, Mark Henly, and Gregor Gose led the way as Clemson took the top three spots in that event.

There was no diving at Friday's meet. The Clemson women's team will travel to Athens, GA to face off against California on Saturday, November 2, at noon.
