Paul Carter Lowers Two Masters National Records -- October 7, 2002

CITY OF COMMERCE, Calif., Oct. 6. PAUL V. Carter began the short course season where he left off in long course -- breaking two USMS national records over the weekend at the Swim Jam Senior Development (USA Swimming) Meet.

Carter started by breaking the 50 and 100 meter butterfly marks for men 45-49 with a 27.06 split at the 50 and a 57.55 100 meter finishing time. The 50 fly split just eclipsed the record of 27.08 set almost 10 years ago by Dan Thompson and his 100 time crushed the old record of 1:01.13 set by Tom Perrin.

Carter came back a few events later and lowered the 50 butterfly record again by clocking a 26.49.

With the exception of 34 year-old Trojan Teammate Eric Hochstein, Carter was more than 25 years older than the next eldest competitor. "One of the guys I swam against asked me what I was doing at the meet. I laughed and said, 'I should be asking you that... this is a Senior Development meet and I think I am closer to being a senior than you."

Carter is training in the hope of becoming the oldest qualifier for the United States Olympic Trials in July of 2004
