NCAA Div. I Men: Cal Smacks Pacific, 163-91

BERKELEY, CA. Oct. 5. COACH Nort Thornton's Cal Golden Bears men's swimming team — among the contenders for national honors at next spring's
NCAA Championships in Austin the final weekend of March — opened their 2002-03 season with a 163-91 win over Pacific in a dual meet at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

The Bears (1-0) captured every event, with freshmen Mike Cavic, Ryan Lean and Jens Thiele victorious in two events each.

Cavic, Swimming World's male high school swimmer ofthe year last season, won the 50 yard freestyle in a very fast early-season 20.53 and the 100 yard butterfly (49.68). Lean notched wins in the 1000 free (9:20.16) and 500 (4:32.91). Thiele — a 6-1, 170-pound freshman import from Hamburg, Germany
—won the 100 yard backstroke (pr and nation-leading 48.75) and 100 free (45.48).

Other Cal winners included seniors Joe Bruckart in the 200 free (1:40.37) and Quentin Byma in the 100 breaststroke (56.05), juniors Jeff Natalizio in
the 200 back (1:50.90) and Keith Vogelgesang in the 200 fly (1:52.17), and sophomores Caleb Rowe in the 200 breast (2:03.41) and John Dorr in the 400
individual medley (3:59.85).

The Bears also won both the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.13) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.83).

Cal will meet Pacific again Oct. 25-26 as the team travels to Stockton to compete in the Pacific Invitational.

MIA were defending NCAA 100 free champ (and American/ NCAA record-holder in the 50-100 frees, senior Anthony Ervin) and junior bacstroker-flyer Alex Lim, who is returning from this week's Asian Games in Korea.

With those two in their lineup Cal will be a formidable contender and among the favorites to win NCAAs.

However, if treble-defending national champ Texas is to be thwarted from its quest for a "four-peat" next March at home it'll take a superlative effort by whatever team does the deed.

The Longhorns under veteran head coach Eddie Reese are the only team since USC (1974-'77) to four-peat, having done so from '88 through '91. Stanford has three-peated a couple of times in the '80s and '90s but has yet to get that elusive fourth-straight championship.
