US Gets Get First Win at Cadet Water Polo Tourney -- August 31, 2002
OBREMOVAC, Yugoslavia, August 30. THE USA boys' Cadet Team gained its first win of the Yugoslavian International Invitational Tournament here today with a 9-6 win over Turkey.
Will Hindle-Katel got the USA on the board with a goal from 2 meters at 6:21. Turkey's Kagan Suimer responded at goal at 2:56 to tie the score at one. Matt Sagehorn put the US back in front, 2-1, at :54 of the first period.
Christian Flores scored on a breakaway at 5:09 and Hindle-Katel and Sagehorn scored again to give the USA a 5-1 lead until Cem Garak brought Turkey to 5-2 with :26 left in the first half.
Sagehorn scored his third goal of the game at 6:31 of the third to extend the USA lead to four goals. Turkey then scored two goals before Janson Wigo socred on a power play at 1:43 to make it 7-4 USA.
Matt Askel and Charles Wright scored in the fourth quarter, matching the two goals scored by Turkey in the final frame.
"I'm really happy for the boys," said Cadet coach Doug Peabody. "We worked very hard for the past three weeks and came into this tournament with very high expectations. Three losses in a row for this group of boys, who are all very used to winning, was very difficult."
Before today's afternoon game, the team was taken on a tour of Belgrade where they saw the old city as well as buildings that were damaged by NATO bombing a few years ago.
Saturday, the USA will play Slovakia for fifth place. In today's game against Russia, the Slovaks made a remarkable comeback, scoring four goals in the final two minutes, including a game winning half-court skip shot at the buzzer. Earlier in the week, the USA lost to the Slovakians 5-1.
Hungary will play Yugoslavia for the gold tomorrow while Greece plays Croatia for the bronze.
