Poor Kick Sends Canada’s Knabe Home Early

By Stephen J. Thomas

YOKOHAMA, August 29. CANADIAN breaststroker Morgan Knabe was sent home by team management after the 21-year-old Olympian broke a pane of glass in the warm-down area with an ill-directed kick of frustration immediately following a poor performance in the final of the 100 breaststroke, on day two of competition.

The Canadian record-holder required several stitches to his foot after finishing a disappointing sixth in the final in 1:02.28, just over one second outside his best from Fukuoka last year.

Better news for Canada was the performance of teenage breaststroker, Mike Brown. Brown finished ahead of Knabe in the 100 in a PR 1:02.21 and set a new national record in the 200 final, finishing a creditable fourth in a very fast 2:12.87.
