Terrapins Smash Three National Age Group Records -- August 7, 2002
CONCORD, Calif., Aug. 7. SWIMMERS representing the Terrapins Swim Club in Concord, Calif., set three national age group (NAG) records in meets recently.
Competing at the Texas Senior Circuit Championships in mid-July, 13 year-old Sean Mahoney - America's answer to 13 year-old Huingarian Dani Gyurta - slashed three seconds from the 13-14 boys' 200 meter breaststroke mark with a brilliant 2:20.81 - a Senior National qualifying time.
Sean is still training in the Terrapins' age group program, and swims no more than 35,000-38,000 yds per week. He is well aware of the young Hungarian. The trans-Atlantic competition between the two 13 year-olds could well results in a world record a few years down the line.
AT the Far Western Championships last weekend, the Terrapins' 11-12 boys relay team broke both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle records.
The team of Donald Walter, Sean Reilly, Matt Dentone, and Matt Bishop clocked 2:04.53 for the medley and 1:51.79 for the free relay.
