Australian Olympian Brett Hill, 57, Dies Suddenly

By Stephen J Thomas

NORTH SYDNEY, Australia, July 13. AUSTRALIAN '64 Olympian Brett Hill died suddenly from a heart attack last Friday morning, as he was getting out of the pool after completing his own swim session.

Earlier in the day, the 57-year-old assistant coach at the Willoughby pool had supervised the daily morning squad with friend and head coach Graeme Brewer (Moscow Olympic bronze 200 free).

Hill reached the 200 butterfly final in Tokyo in 1964, finishing seventh behind Aussi great Kevin Berry who broke his own world record in that final.

After retiring from competitive swimming, Hill played some years of first grade rugby with the Northern Suburbs club where this correspondent had the pleasure of playing alongside him.

"Hilly" will be remembered as a man who was passionate about his sport, whether participant, coach or spectator.
