Swimming World Throwback Thursday Video: Jacob Pebley Mentors at Select Camp

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 5. EARLIER this week, we brought you an interview with Justin Lynch on “The Morning Swim Show,” where Lynch talked about his duties at the USA Swimming Western Zone Select Camp as a mentor to the young swimmers.

Three years ago, SwimmingWorld.TV visited the same camp at Arizona State University, where Jacob Pebley was working in a mentor capacity. At the time, Pebley was being discussed as a future star in the backstroke events — similar to Lynch’s position today as a potential contender in butterfly — and he has lived up to that promise with multiple appearances in the finals at nationals, Olympic Trials and NCAAs.

In this Throwback Thursday video, we bring you a chat with Pebley, in which he talks about his mentor role and a training set he did with the campers in which he tried to approach his best time. He said his goals for the summer were “to be top eight, at least in the 200 backstroke … and make the youth world championship team.” Both of those came true, with Pebley placing sixth in the 200 back at nationals and winning the 100 and 200 back at the junior world championships.

Pebley also talked about his future teammate at Cal, Ryan Murphy, and the motivation he brings to Pebley’s training and racing. We hope you enjoy this compelling look at one of America’s biggest backstroke stars, who will be racing some of the world’s best this weekend at the Monte Carlo stop of the Mare Nostrum series.
