Hagiwara Sets Third National Record, Yamada Notches her Second at Japanese Nationals

By Hideki Mochizuki and Takahisa Ide

TOKYO, April 3. JAPANESE Olympian Tomoko Hagiwara stroked to her third Japanese national record in as many days at the Japanese National Short Course Championships. Sachiko Yamada, who set a world record in the 800 meters on Monday, set her second national mark today.

The three-day meet, which ended today, was held at the Tatsumi International Swimming Pool in Tokyo.

Hagiwara swam to a 2:10.22 time in the 200 IM, one second slower than the Asian record set in 1993 by China's Dai Guohong. Dai disappeared from view after the first Chinese doping scandal in 1994.

Yamada swam a very fast 4:02.42 for the 400 free, not only breaking her own national mark but the Asian record as well. That record was set at 4:02.80 by China's Chen Hua last December.

A third women's national mark was set by Maki Mita with her 2:06.26 in the 200 fly. That time just missed the Asian standard of 2:06.04 by China's Liu Limin set in March 2000 when she competed for the University of Nevada at the NCAAs.

There were other notable swims today. For the women, Noriko Inada won the 100m back in 59.78 and Junko Isoda took the 200 breast in 2:22.60 to go with her win yesterday in the 100m (1:07.17).

Shunichi Fujita went 3:46.11 to take the men's 400m free. Other fast men's times included: HIdemaso Sano's 1:58.07 for the 200m IM, and makoto Muto's 1:55.41 for the 200m fly.
