NCAA Div. I Men: Virginia Takes ACC Crown--#4 in a Row -- March 5, 2002
COLLEGE PARK, Md., March 2. VIRGINIA won its fourth-onsecutive men's Atlantic Coast Conference Championship tonight -- and with a team comprised
mainly of underclassmen, Coach Mark Bernardino's Cavaliers could be on pace to equal (or surpass) the record six-straight titles won by North Carolina.
Virginia won six of this evening's eight events to rack-up 872 points. Georgia Tech, making its biggest splash yet, overtook North Carolina for second (680.5) while the Tar Heels -- last week's women's champs -- dropped to third (601.5).
Virginia was led by sophomore Luke Anderson, the meet's Most Valuable Swimmer, who swept the 50-100-200 frees and was a member of the Cavaliers' winning 400 medley and 400-800 free relays.
His pr in the 100 free (43.08) was a UVA school record and an NCAA auto qualifier plus fourth-fastest nationally.
Teammate Ian Pritchard, who won the 500 free opening-night, stroked to a 14:54.07 1650 free win tonight, just off Michigan's Brendan Nelligan's nation-leading 14:53+ from the Big 10 Championships.
Pritchard's pr and meet-record is 14:51.70 from last season. His win marked the fifth-straight season a Cavalier has won this race.
The biggest splash was made by Cav Gary Marshall, a soph who won the 100 breast in a pr 53.76 and the 200 in another pr 1:54.79. Both times are also fastest nationally as well as ACC Championship marks too.
The previous 200 best was by Texas soph Brendan Hansen (1:55.63 from last weekend's Big 12s). Hansen is defending NCAA 100-200 champ and was World Champion last summmer in the 200.
Marshall's times, while outstanding and nation-leading, are still not quite UVA school records. Those belong to a certain Mr. Moses with his 52.60-1:53.99 from his final season in Charlottesville two years ago.
UVA's Luke Anderson also stroked to a pair of wins in the backstrokes and freshman Bo Greenwood set meet records en route to wins in both IMs. He was runner-up in the 200 back too.
Most Valuable Diver honors went to Florida State's Louis Gagnet, who triumphed on the 1- and 3-meter boards.
Georgia Tech scored its lone win when David Laitala won the 100 back in 48.02 with a pr 47.98 in the prelims. The Yellow Jackets' Shilo Ayalon, an Israeli Olympian, set school records and prs in the 400 IM (3:50.27 for second) and 1650 free (15:01.14).
