NCAA Div. I Women: Iowa State Crushes Nebraska

Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 1. IN a contest between two schools that, shamefully and under false pretenses abolished their men's swim teams last year, the University of Nebraska women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the regular season with a home loss to Iowa State Friday afternoon at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, 150-83.

Despite the loss, the coaching staff was pleased with the performance of the Huskers.

"We had some great swims today," assistant coach Doug Humphrey said. "It's nice to see the girls reap the rewards of the hard work that they have put in this season."

Head coach Pablo Morales echoed Humphrey's thoughts.

"The team came out today and they did what we asked them to, they swam hard."

Nebraska was led by freshman Diana Torres who took home first in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 59.28. The Bogotá, Columbia, native finished second in the 200-yard individual medley as well. Torres also had a hand in two relays, the 200-yard free relay and the 400-yard medley relay, which finished first and second, respectively.

In the diving well, sophomore Jerilyn Drummond swept the one and the three meter events. Drummond scored a 273.60 in the three meter and a 271.80 in the one meter.

Junior Laura Landgreen touched the wall in 1:11.52 to win the 100-yard breaststroke and freshman Kristen Gordon finished second in the 100-yard backstroke to round out the scoring for the Huskers.

Nebraska is next in action at the Big 12 Championships Feb. 20-23, 2002 at College Station, Texas.
