Virginia's Cara Lane Named ACC Women's Swimmer of the Week -- January 28, 2002

GREENSBORO, N.C., Jan. 28. UNIVERSITY of Virginia junior Cara Lane (Charlotte, N.C./Providence) has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week for the third consecutive week as announced today.

Lane, the two-time defending NCAA champion in the mile, led 14th-ranked Virginia to a 131-111 victory at South Carolina Saturday, January 26.

Lane, who was also a three-time ACC Swimmer of the Week selection last season, won all three events in which she competed against the Gamecocks. For the second consecutive week she recorded season-best times in winning the 1000 free, 500 free and 200 butterfly.

Lane's time of 9:46.63 in the 1000 free is the top time in the ACC this season. Her time of 2:01.21 in the 200 fly ranks second on the team and third in the ACC. She lowered her season-best time in the 500 free (4:50.32) by more than two and a half seconds, which ranks fourth in the ACC, behind three of her teammates.

The Virginia women's and men's swimming and diving teams return to action on Sunday, February 3 when they host Pittsburgh at 11:00 a.m. at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
