NCAA Div. I Men: Cal Upsets ASU

BERKELEY, Cal., jan. 25. FRESH off an impressive victory at last weekend's Dallas Morning News Invitational, Coach Nort Thornton's Cal Golden Bears
opened their Pac-10 season in impressive fashion here this afternoon with a 162-130 win over previously undefeated Arizona State.

Coach Mike Chasson's Sun Devils were fifth-ranked nationally coming in, claiming among their victims Coach Mark Schubert's USC Trojans). However, ASU was no match for an aroused Bear squad, as Cal won 11 of the meet's 16 events, with 10 different Golden Bear swimmers winning individual events.

Cal's No. 1s included included senior Sean Gruver in the 200 free (1:38.80), soph Malaysian Olympian Alex Lim in the 100 back (48.80), junior Daniel Kim in the 100 breast (55.67), senior Hiro Sakoda in the 200 fly (1:48.65), Olympic gold medalist junior Anthony Ervin in the 50 free (19.86), Croatian freshman import Duje Draganja in the 100 free (44.25), freshman Caleb Rowe
in the 200 breast (2:01.15), senior Mattias Ohlin in the 100 fly (48.78), senior Bayani Flores in the 200 IM (1:49.53) and junior Nicolas Bartolotta on the one-meter board (309.90).

The Bears also won the 200 medley relay in a Spieker Aquatics' Complex record 1:29.54, with the team comprising Lim, Kim, Ervin and Draganja –ninth-nationally for 2001-'02.

Arizona State was paced by Gavin Meadows, a member of Great Britain's national team, who won the 500 (4:29.03) and 1000 free (9:21.28).

Cal will host No. 9-ranked Arizona Saturday, Jan. 26 at 12 p.m. at Spieker. The UA Wildcats were pounded by top-ranked Stanford, 192-106, Friday afternoon at Stanford.
