Jean Troy, Florida Mavericks Set Masters Marks

By Margie Hutinger.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Jan. 15. JANUARY 13th was a notable day for the Florida Mavericks, as they set four Masters national and one world record, in a long course Development Meet in St Petersburg, FL.

Jean Troy, 75, set the world mark in the women's 75-79 age group, while the Mavs' 320+ (combined ages) relay teams notched the national records.

June Reynolds, Florence Carr, Kay Schimpf and Peggy Hughes destroyed the 400 meter freestyle relay record of 10:13.80 for women 320 and over with a time of 8:57.69. The old record was set by a St. Pete team in 1994.

When they swam this relay, the temperature was in the low 50's, and they bundled up to stay warm, as they had two more relays to swim.

It must have worked as this same foursome obliterated the seven-year-old 800 m free relay record of 22:37.07 — also by a St. Pete team — with a new time of 19:29.44. Awesome performances, set in an outdoor pool, with the cool winter temperatures, which only warmed up to 60 degrees by the end of the meet.

Meanwhile, Jean Troy, June Reynolds, Peggy Hughes and Kay Schimpf broke the 400 m medley relay record, 12:14.90, set by San Mateo in 1997, with a new time of 10:19.75.

Two heats before the relay, Troy swam a national record time in her 50 free, but didn't have three timers. She then swam the fly leg in the medley relay, with a time only five seconds slower than her best individual time last year.

In the next event, she swam to a world and national record time in the 100 free, clocking 1:28.07. Her swim broke the national record of 1:32.33 set by Flo Carr last year, and the world mark of 1:29.19 by Australia's Margaret Cunningham, also set last year.
