Performance of the Week: July 17, 2012

PHOENIX, Arizona, July 17. TODAY we're going out of the box — or more accurately, out of the pool — for this week's honor. Usually we honor an athlete that has done something extraordinary in the pool, but this week, we want to put some praise on a group of people helping those athletes on their way in London.

Monday saw the largest number of arrivals at Heathrow Airport, more than 236,000 passengers from all over the world. To help speed along the arrivals process, the airport has enlisted 1,000 volunteers to help with arrivals, and hundreds of immigration officers worked the lines at the customs check to make lines move faster.

The crowds will continue to flow through the airport as many athletes begin arriving in the next few days in advance of the Opening Ceremony on July 27 and the first full day of competition on July 28. Outside the airport, special lanes on London's highways will be created for vehicles transporting athletes and other Olympic officials directly to the Olympic village.

Congratulations London on what seems to be the start of smooth operations for the Olympics.
