NCAA Div. III: Hope Sweeps Alma -- November 12, 2001

Nov. 10. THE Flying Dutchmen remained undefeated on the season posting a 127-82 MIAA dual meet victory over Alma on Saturday. Coach John Patnott's Dutchmen are 4-0 overall and stand 3-0 in the MIAA.

Nine different swimmers captured first place in an event. They were Daniel Bouwens, 1,000 free(10:46.19); Jeff Vroegindewey, 200 free (1:50.23); Jake Taber, 50 free (:22.44); Matt Waterstone, 200 IM (4:37.21); John Vinke, 100 butterfly (:56.86); Chris Hamstra, 100 free (:49.46); Brad Norden, 100 backstroke (:56.52); Tim DeHaan, 500 free (5:13.74); and Ross Geurink, 100
breaststroke (1:01.75).


In the women's meet, the Flying Dutch started a new MIAA dual meet winning streak by topping Alma 126-112 on Saturday.

Coach John Patnott's Dutch had a 50-meet winning streak snapped a week ago. Saturday's win was Hope's 98th in 100 duals dating back to the 1984 season. The Dutch are 2-2 overall and 2-1 in MIAA duals.

Seven different swimmers captured a first, including the three Smith girls. Senior Laura Smith won the 1,000 free (11:56.48) while her freshman sister Sarah captured the 50 free (:25.89). Sophomore Michelle Smith, no relation to Laura or Sarah, won the 200 free (1:58.70).

Other Hope winners were Erin VandenBerg, 400 IM (4:58.92); Beth Fredericks, 100 free (:55.43); Kari Foust, 100 back (1:04.90) and Jennifer Strach, 100
breaststroke (1:15.86).
