New York A.C. Rolls at US Open Water Polo

NEWPORT BEACH, Cal., Nov. 2. THE top water polo club teams from around the USA and Canada arrived today for the first day of action at the US Open. New York Athletic Club "A", made up of three former USA Olympic players and one USA National player, crushed the competition to soar into the second round 2-0. NYAC won last year's US Open and the Summer Men's Outdoor
Nationals.

"This is the highest level you can play as a club" said Lou Gioia of New York Athletic Club. "The Olympic Club rivalry goes back a long time, but there is a lot of solid competition this tournament."

NYAC "A" beat Riverside's Cal Baptist 14-4 and then crushed Chicago's Windy City 22-2. USA National Team member Adam Wright led NYAC with seven goals in two games.

"Today was a chance to kick out the mistakes," said NYAC "A" coach Scott Schulte. "We're trying to click as a team. There are better water polo players playing better water polo this tournament, and with the current National Team players playing, the momentum of the game has sped up considerably."

Cal Baptist University opened up the tournament beating Windy City 17-6. Goran Milic led Cal Baptist with four goals. Chino Hills' club CHAWP upset NYAC
"B" the next game 7-6, scoring within two minutes in the game and then stealing a pass with less than a minute to hold onto the victory.

Vancouver Selects came out strong and topped Seattle's The Doggies 13-6 early in the afternoon, jumping ahead 3-0 and never looking back.

After NYAC "A" jumped all over Cal Baptist, Newport Water Polo Foundation stepped it up and beat NYAC "B" 9-6. Newport held a 8-2 lead after three quarter, but let NYAC "B" back in the game and held onto a 9-6 win.
USA National Team member Dan Klatt led the team with four goals, three scored on breakaway goals.

Late in the afternoon, San Francisco's Olympic Club and Vancouver exchanged goals the first two quarters to keep a tight game, but OC outscored Vancouver 5-1 in the third quarter to take the victory 11-6. Brad Kittridge scored four goals to lead OC.

Long Beach Shore and Calgary battled played the most intense game of the day the next game. A number of the Canadian National Team play for Calgary, while USA National Team members Larry Felix and Merrill Moses wear the LB Shore caps. It was a physical game from the get go, especially on counter attacks where each team was evenly matched. LB Shore played without a coach, which made substitutions and strategies more difficult to implement. USA National Team member Larry Felix and Jeff Netherton each scored a goal to tie the game, but could not find the net again and had to settle for a tie 5-5.

NYAC "A" buried Windy City 22-3 the next game, which was followed by two more blow-away games, Newport sinking CHAWP 15-4 and Olympic Club taming the
Doggies 21-2.

"Overall, it was a great first day of competition," said organizer Chris Street. "The teams are out to play hard, and Saturday's games should be even more exciting."
