NCAA Men: Johns Hopkins Drowns Navy -- October 27, 2001
Baltimore, MD, Oct. 27. THE Johns Hopkins men's swimming team continued its impressive start to the 2001-02 season with a 121-84 victory over Navy Saturday afternoon in the White Athletic Center.
Scott Armstrong (Medford Lakes, NJ/Bernards/West Morris Central) won the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:50.27 and the 500 freestyle in 4:44.19 to lead the Blue Jays, while Justin Brannock (West Palm Beach, FL/Dreyfoos School of the Arts) took the 200 free freestyle in 1:46.25 and the 100 freestyle in 48.42.
Other individual winners for Hopkins were Oliver Buccicone (Rochester, MN/Lourdes), who won the 200 butterfly in 1:57.34, and David Lofthus (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima), who took the 200 backstroke in 1:56.70.
The 400 medley relay team of Lofthus, Scott Pitz (Paoli, PA/Conestoga), John Balfour II (Plano, TX/Plano East), and Brannock was victorious in 3:32.93, and the 400 freestyle relay team of
William Freund (Linwood, NJ/Mainland Regional), Loren Robinson (Coats, NC/Triton), Lofthus, and Kyle Robinson (Holden, MA/Wachusett Regional) took their race in 3:13.98.
Brian DeMell won the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.21 and the 200 individual medley in 1:57.98, while Matt James won the 50 freestyle in 22.19 to lead Navy.
The Blue Jays, now 2-1 on the season after defeating Howard and losing at Maryland Friday, return to action on November 2-3 when Hopkins competes at the Loyola Invitational.
