Richest Swim Meet in History to Be Held in New York, October 20

NEW YORK, Oct. 9. A dash-for-cash swim meet, featuring most of the world's top sprinters, will be held in New York on Saturday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

The Novo Nordisk Sprint Cup will offer the richest payday in swimming history: $310,000. It will be broadcast in the U.S. on Fox Sports Net on Saturday, December 8, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST, as well as in several international markets, including Australia, Europe, and South America.

The meet is also symbolic of American determination and resilience, said Phil Whitten, meet director and editor-in-chief of Swimming World magazine.
"This will be the world's first major swimming competition since the September 11 terrorist attack, and it's no accident that we're holding it in New York."

All-Star Cast
Among the athletes committed to attending are Olympic gold medalists Gary Hall, Jr.(USA), Josh Davis (USA), Megan Quann (USA), Amanda Beard (USA), Lars Frolander (Sweden), Inge De Bruijn (Netherlands) and Geoff Huegill (Australia).

World record-holders and world champions include Americans Neil Walker, Ed Moses, Haley Cope and Kristy Kowal (USA); plus Mark Foster (Great Britain), Mark Warnecke (Germany), Therese Alshammar (Sweden), Sandra Volker (Germany), Johanna Sjoberg (Sweden), Roman Sloudnov (Russia) and Martina Moravcova (Slovakia).

An autograph session wwill follow the meet.

Origins
The meet is the brainchild of eight-time Olympic medalist Gary Hall, Jr., who joined in partnership with Novo Nordisk, a leader in diabetes care, and SFX, a leader in talent management and marketing.

Commenting on the event he conceived, Hall said,

Three Teams to Battle
The meet features competition among three teams – the United States, the European Union (EU), and the World. The events are designed to showcase the speed of some of the world’s fastest swimmers.

Gary Hall, Jr., was diagnosed with diabetes in 1999, but still competed in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, where he won four medals, including the prestigious 50 meter freestyle, which crowns the
"Fastest Swimmer in the World."
