By Russ Mischner

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 7. THE University of Texas women's swimming team picked up its first victory of the 2001-02 dual meet season, defeating Houston 175-87, Friday afternoon at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. The Longhorns improve to 1-0, while Houston falls to 0-1 on the season.

Texas featured five double-event winners, led by junior Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif./Dublin) who took first-place in the 100 freestyle (51.54) and the 100 butterfly (56.63). Junior Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore/California) and sophomore Jenna Bridges
(Tallahassee, Fla./The Bolles School/Virginia), both transfers competing in their first dual meet for UT, tabbed four individual victories.

Yeo took first in the 50 butterfly (25.14) and the 100
breaststroke (1:04.56), while Bridges won the 800 freestyle (8:08.21) and the 200 butterfly (2:06.69). Senior Bethany Lindberg (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) took top honors in the 100 (59.20) and 200 (2:07.35) backstroke events, followed by sophomore Jacinta Van
Lint (Albury, Australia/Xavier) who placed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.10) and the 200 IM (2:09.15).

Freshman Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn./Eden Praire) was the lone freshman to pick up an individual win for UT, winning the 200 freestyle (1:52.51), while sophomore Lacey Elliot (El Paso, Texas/Franklin) and Erin Phenix (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) tied for first in the 50 freestyle (23.90).

"I thought that it was very important to get the team fully dressed in their uniforms and swim a meet," co-head coach Jill Sterkil said. "Competing this early in the season gives the players a chance to go ahead and begin to jell as a team. I thought that they gave a solid effort this afternoon. It is always exciting to start a new season."

During the summer of 2001, The University of Texas began construction on a $3-million-dollar renovation to the Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Due to these ongoing renovations, all of the grandstand seating area of the swim center was closed to the public during Friday's season-opening dual meet vs. Houston.

The Longhorns return to action when they travel to the Big 12 Conference Relays, on Friday, Oct. 19, at 10 a.m. in Columbia, Miss.
