Goodwill Gold Medal Round: Aussies Sweep

BRISBANE, Australia, Sept. 3rd, 2001. AUSTRALIA swept to victory in the gold medal round of both the men's and women's team competition at the Goodwill Games, delighting a capacity crowd at the Chandler Aquatic Centre in suburban Cleveland as well as a tuned-in national televiossion audience.

The Aussie women disposed of the USA 89-60, while the Aussie men had an even easier time, dispensing with the World All-Stars 1104-45.

Women: Australia 89, USA 60
The ultimate outcome of this meet was presaged early on, when the home teaam won several crucial events, setting the tone for the rest of the contest.

The Aussies won the medley relay, mainly on the strength of Petria Thomas' 58.39 fly leg. No big surprise there.

Then Jennifer Reilly took the 400 IM handily in 4:46.51, as the USA's Adrienne Binder and Kristern Caverly finished 2-3.

The 200 free was arguably the best race of the meet, as all four women swam 1:59s. Lindsay Benko, who led through 150 meters couldn't quite hold on, as Australia's Elsa Graham split 29.89 on the final 50 to touch first in 1:59.37. Benko followed 5-hundredths of a second later, with world champion Giann Rooney third (1:59.83) and Lauren Thies fourth (1:59.97).

Dyana Calub took the 100 back (1:01.73) and Petria Thomas won the 50 fly (27.00) before the US finally won an event.

Tammie Stone got the US on the top of the podium, taking the 50 free (25.41). Then Amy Balcerzak-Field upset the field in the 100 breast with a 1:09.37, as all four swimmers went 1:09s.

The Aussies put a stop to any thoughts of a comeback by taking four straight events: Petria Thomas won the 200 fly (2:09.55); Sarah Ryan took the 100 free (55.48); Clementine Stoney was victorious in the 200 back; and Leisel Jones won the 200 breast (2:29.41).

The USA's Ashley Chandler stopped the bleeding with a superb 4:12.53 win in the 400 free, and Haley Cope tok the 50 back (29.16). But it was too little too late.

Petria Thomas's 58.57 led a one-two Aussie finish in the 100 fly; Brooke Hanson took the 50 breast (32.22) and Lori Munz won the 200 IM (2:17.31).

The US salvaged some pride with a hard-fought win in the 400 free relay, out-touching the Aussies 3:42.46 to 3:42.77.

Men: Australia 104, World 45
This one was never in doubt.

Australia set the tone in the very first event, the medley relay, with a Games record 3:37.96.

New Zealand's Dean Kent pulled off a major upset in the 400 IM, beating Australia's Justin Norris to the wall, 4:19.04 to 4:19.99.

The 200 free saw an even bigger upset as Grant Hackett just out-touched world record-holder Ian Thorpe in the 200 free by 3-hundredths, clocking 1:50.63.

The Aussies wound up winning 14 of the 17 events contested. Hackett won the 400 free in 3:46.46, while Thorpe took the 100 in 49.21, his fastest cntury of the Goodwill Games.

Matt Welsh and Geoff Huegill were the only other double winners for the winners. Welsh took the 50 and 100 back while Huegill won the 50 and 100 fly.

Jim Piper turned in the Games' fastest 200 breast, winning in 2;12.58.

Brett Hawk won the 50 free (22.58), Michael Klim took the 200 fly (1:58.05), Rya Hass won the 200 back (2:00.14) while Robert Van Der Zant took the 200 IM (2:01.79). The Aussies administered the coup de grace with a victory in the 400 free relay, 3:19.32.

Canada's Morgan Knabe was the World team's brightest star, winning both the 50 (28.67) and 100 breast (1:02.46).
