Day 6: Phillips 66 National Championships -- July 31, 1997
Women's 800m freestyle:
Brooke Bennett, the 1996 Olympic gold medalist in this event, won in a cool 8:28.79. Diana Munz's time of 8:36.26 was fast enough for second. Munz has qualified for the World Championship Team in her second event.
Men's 50m freestyle:
Bill Pilczuk, of Auburn fame, won this splash-and-dash with an extremely fast 22.45. Neil Walker, who finished with a 22.58, has qualified for his 6th event at the World Championships. He still has the 200m backstroke tommorrow.
Gary Hall Jr. finished 5th and will be going to the World Championships as a relay member.
Women's 200m backstroke:
Amanda Adkins won this event in a time of 2:12.62. A student at the University of Georgia, she has been overshadowed by the likes of Olympic gold medalists Beth Botsford, Whitney Hedgepeth, and Lea Maurer, but 1998 may be her time to shine.
Incidentally, Lea Maurer finished second to make the World Championship Team in her second event.
Men's 200m IM:
Tom Dolan won the 200 IM in convincing fashion. His time of 2:01.18 beat 1992 Olympian Ron Karnaugh by a second-and-a-half.
