USA Swimming Long Course Nationals: FAST’s Robert Margalis Uses Early Lead to Claim 400 IM Crown

PALO ALTO, California, August 2. IT took a monster first half, but FAST's Robert Margalis has just enough in the tank to capture the men's 400 IM title at the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals.

Margalis posted a 4:15.62 for the win, while Lake Forest's Conor Dwyer blasted three seconds from his personal best with a second-place 4:15.97. Margalis wound up 19th in the world after the swim, while Dwyer took 20th in the world.

William Harris placed third in 4:18.48, while Delaware's Andrew Gemmell finished a strong double with a fourth-place 4:19.82. Gemmell competed in the 400 free earlier in the night.

Tucson Ford's Austen Thompson (4:19.88), Wisconsin's Michael Weiss (4:21.50), Athens Bulldog William Cregar (4:21.68), Santa Maria's Josh Prenot (4:21.82), Missouri's Jack Brown (4:21.83) and Palo Alto's Ben Hinshaw (4:22.06) earned the rest of the championship finishes.

NBAC's Chase Kalisz won the B final in 4:18.43, while teammate Brennan Morris scored the C final title in 4:21.86.
