USA Swimming Long Course Nationals: Brendan Hansen Just Misses 1:00, Wins 100 Breast

PALO ALTO, California, August 2. JUST around half-a-year after returning to the pool in a serious manner, Longhorn's Brendan Hansen nearly cleared 1:00 to win the men's 100 breast title at the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals.

Hansen posted a 1:00.08 for the win, bettering his prelim swim of 1:00.17, to remain ninth in the world rankings. Both of those swims eclipsed Mark Gangloff's 1:00.19 from Worlds to become the top American this year.

Also on a bit of a comeback trail, SwimMAC's Kevin Swander jumped into second on the podium with a strong time of 1:00.59. That effort jumped him up to 19th in the world rankings, and in a better spot than he has been since leaving Indiana University as a post-grad swimmer.

Tucson Ford's Marcus Titus, who will also be competing in the World Deaf Championships later this month, gave Hansen a run early on but settled for third with a 1:00.82.

Fresh off the World Championships, Eric Shanteau (1:01.18) and Mike Alexandrov (1:01.22) took fourth and fifth. Trojan's John Criste (1:01.36), Fox Valley's Kevin Cordes (1:01.60), Longhorn's Eric Friedland (1:01.74), Stanford's Curtis Lovelace (1:01.76) and Stanford's Bernard Johnson (1:02.14) also put up times in the finale.

Tucson Ford's Clark Burckle won the B final in 1:01.38, while Ed Moses, on the comeback trail posted a 1:02.14 to finish tied with Matt Elliott for 17th overall.

Scott Weltz picked up the C final title in 1:02.20, while Ryan Lochte claimed second in 1:02.30 in an off event after an epic FINA World Long Course Championships. Lochte became just the fourth man to win at least five gold medals in a single world championship meet.
