Misty Injured; Out of Goodwill Games

STANFORD, Cal., July 30. MISTY Hyman, whose upset victory in the 200 meter butterfly was one of the highlights of the 2000 Olympic Games, will not be competing at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane next month.

Hyman is not the only US Olympic gold medalist who will not compete in Brisbane. Lenny Krayzelburg is undergoing minor endoscopic shouldr surgery that will keep him sidlined for a few months. Before leaving for the World Championships, Ed Moses told swiminfo he planned on skipping the meet in Brisbane to return to his studies at the University of Virginia.

Hyman, who had passed on the USA Swimming Spring Ntaionals and the just-completed World Championships, injured her shoulder during dryland training several weeks ago, then reinjured it after trying to train too hard too soon.

"It's nothing serious," Misty told swiminfo, but my doctor says I won't be able to use the shoulder for another three weeks."

Misty qualified first in the 200 meter butterfly at the Janet Evans Invitational just over a week ago, but was unable to swim in the finals. "I was trying to warm up for finals," she said, but no matter what I did, the pain was just too great."

Hyman had been looking forward to swimming in Brisbane, Australia, site of the Goodwill Games, and going head-to-head with Susie O'Neill's successor, Petria Thomas. Thomas, who was third in Sydney last fall, won the world title in Japan last week. In fact, the conqueror of Australia's "Madame Butterfly," susie O'Neill, is a major celebrity in Australia. The Goodwill Games organizers had been building a promotional campaign around Misty's return to the land of her epochal triumph.

Misty Signs With Speedo
On July 21, Misty signed a lucrative four-year endorsement contract with Speedo, a division of The Warnaco Group. She had been one of the USA's most sought-after Olympic athletes, according to her agent, Evan Morgenstein.

"Speedo products have been an integral part of my success," said Misty. "I am thrilled to be representing the world's number one swimwear in competitions, advertising and public appearances."

With her withdrawal from the Goodwill Games, Misty will likely postpone her next competitive venture until late this year or early 2002. "I am leaving in September to spend three months studying in Chile," said the Stanford senior international relations major, "but I'll be training with a team in Santiago."
