FINA World Championships, Water Polo: Serbia, Italy Make Up Gold-Medal Match for Men

SHANGHAI, China, July 28. THE medal rounds are populated in the men's water polo tournament now that Serbia and Italy advanced to the gold-medal match at the FINA World Championships.

Serbia made its way to the gold-medal match with a 15-14 nailbiter over Hungary. Filip Filipovic and Andrija Prlainovic led the way for Serbia with hat tricks, while Norbert Madaras' four-goal effort for Hungary wasn't enough.

Italy, meanwhile, grabbed the other spot in the gold-medal match with a 9-8 triumph over Croatia. Alex Giorgetti topped Italy with three goals, while Miho Boskovic had a hat trick in the loss for Croatia.

The U.S. clipped Germany, 9-8, in the first of the 5th-8th semifinal matches. Ryan Bailey topped scoring for the U.S. with two goals, while Tobias Kreuzmann and Moritz Benedikt Oeler each notched to goals for Germany in the loss.

Spain nabbed the other 5th-8th place semifinal match with a 10-9 win over Montenegro. Xavier Valles Trias posted a hat trick for Spain in the win, while Aleksandar Radovic collected three goals as well in the loss for Montenegro.

Australia claimed the 9th-10th place classification match with an 8-6 triumph over Canada. Aaron Younger paced a balanced scoring attack for Australia with two goals as seven total players tallied goals. Kevin Graham led the way for Canada with a hat trick in the loss.

Japan beat Romania, 18-15, in the 11th-12th place classification match. Yoshinori Shiota was unstoppable with a total of eight goals, while Kan Aoyagi connected for a hat trick as well for Japan. Kalman Kadar paced Romania with four goals, while Cosmin Radu and Nicolae Diaconu each had a hat trick for Romania.
