FINA World Championships, Water Polo: Men’s Quarterfinals Continue; 13th-16th Place Decided

SHANGHAI, China, July 26. THE quarterfinals of the men's water polo tournament continued today at the FINA World Championships, while 13th-16th places have been decided as well.

In a heartbreaker, Hungary downed the U.S., 9-8, in a quarterfinal matchup. Norbert Madaras, Denes Andor Varga and Daniel Rudolf Varga led a balanced scoring attack by Hungary with two goals each. Peter Varellas and Ryan Bailey each had a hat trick for the Stars and Stripes, but it wasn't enough to remain in medal contention.

Serbia followed with a 9-4 thrashing of Germany in another quarterfinal. Filip Filipovic went four-for-nine from the field for Serbia in the win, while teammate Dusko Pijetlovic notched a hat trick as well. Four different players scored for Germany in the loss.

Croatia topped Montenegro, 9-6, in the third quarterfinal matchup of the day. Maro Jokovic collected four goals in the win, while Aleksandar Radovic paced Montenegro with two goals in the loss.

Italy bounced Spain, 10-6, in the final match of the day. Pietro Figlioli tallied four goals in the win for Italy, while six separate players scored for Spain.

Canada topped Romania, 12-8, in the first 9th-12th place semifinal match. Justin Boyd notched four goals for Canada, while teammate Nicolas Constantin Bicari tallied a hat trick. Cosmin Alexandru Radu and Tiberiu Negrean connected with hat tricks in the loss for Romania.

Australia smashed Japan, 15-9, in another 9th-12th place semifinal match. Anthony Martin, Samuel McGregor and Rhys Howden each scored a hat trick for the Aussies, while Koji Takei paced Japan with a hat trick in the loss.

Kazakhstan edged Brazil, 9-7, in the 13th-14th place match. Evgeniy Zhilyayev connected for a hat trick for Kazakhstan, while Felipe Silva turned in two goals as Brazil's leading scorer.

China won the 15th-16th place match, 9-4, over South Africa. Yu Lijun and Li Bin both tallied two goals to lead China, while Ryan Mckay Bell posted two goals to provide half of South Africa's offensive production.
