USA Swimming Sectionals, Iowa City: Matthew Elliott Shines in 200 Breast

IOWA CITY, Iowa, July 21. THE USA Swimming Sectionals held in Iowa City kicked off with quite a few Olympic Trials cuts in long course meter action.

Peoria Area's Matthew Elliott won the men's 200 breast in a Trials cut time of 2:13.89, while NASA Wildcat's Kevin Puskaric finished second in 2:19.12, also clearing the Trials cut. Green Bay's John Bushman finished third in 2:21.33.

Westmont's Kelly Ryan clocked a 57.02 during finals to make the Olympic Trials in the women's 100 free for the win. Badger's Aja Van Hout took second in 57.50, while Wisconsin's Rebecca Thompson finished third in 57.51.

A pair of Olympic Trials cuts were posted in the men's 100 free with Club Hawkeye's Paul Gordon (51.13) and NASA Wildcat's Dong Kim (51.26) both clearing the standard. Club Hawkeye's Duncan Partridge finished third in 51.63.

Aquajets' Abigail Duncan dominated the women's 200 breast with a Trials cut time of 2:33.80. Palatine Park's Colleen Champa took second in 2:38.14, while Club Hawkeye's Karolina Wartalowicz wound up third in 2:38.41.

Wheaton's Connie Hsu, 16, (2:15.15) and Lakeside's Meredith King (2:16.31) both cleared the Trials cut in the women's 200 fly. NASA Wildcat's Rebeca Soderholm finished third in 2:17.20.

NASA Wildcat's Sean Mathews (2:01.62), Green Bay's Luke Bushman (2:03.04) and Blue Devil's Matthew Conway (2:03.55) all eclipsed the Trials cut for the top three spots in the men's 200 fly.

Wisconsin's Danielle Beckwith won the women's 800 free in 8:57.57, while Elmbrook's Hojan Clark finished second in 8:57.97. Patriot's Morgan Dickson earned third in 9:01.47.

Hinsdale's Daniel Thomson finished first in the men's 800 free with an 8:25.67. Palatine Park's Damon Zito (8:35.00) and Francis Bott (8:36.57) picked up second and third.
