FINA World Championships, Open Water: United States Wins Team 5K Event

SHANGHAI, China, July 20. IN the initial offering of a world team 5K title at the FINA World Championships in open water, the United States earned the victory.

The threesome of Andrew Gemmell, Ashley Twichell and Sean Ryan tallied a time of 57:00.6 to claim victory in the event. In previous open water worlds competition, the U.S. has won gold only a handful of times.

Eva Fabian (2010) and Erica Rose (1998) have won women's 5K titles, while Tobie Smith took home the 2000 women's 25K title for the U.S. Chip Peterson won the 10K title in 2005, while Alex Meyer (2010) and Chad Hundeby (1991) have picked up men's 25K titles.

Australia's team of Melissa Gorman, Ky Hurst and Rhys Mainstone finished in the silver position with a time of 57:01.8, while Germany's squad of Isabelle Haerle, Thomas Lurz and Jan Wolfgarten wound up taking bronze in 57:44.2.
