USA Swimming Sectionals, Columbia: Jack Brown, Nicole Menzel Set Meet Records

COLUMBIA, Missouri, July 20. THE initial evening of long course meter competition at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Columbia featured a pair of meet records.

Jack Brown crushed the meet record in the men's 200 breast with a 2:16.56. The previous meet record had stood at 2:20.52 by Michael Bruce in 2000. KC Blazer Michael Glenn earned second in 2:22.44, while Razorback's Dexter Thomas took third in 2:23.56.

Razorback Nicole Menzel won the women's 800 free in a meet-record time of 8:48.29. That swim eclipsed the 8:53.55 clocked by Britta Massengale in 2002. Kansas' Rebecca Swank placed second in 8:56.02, while Razorback's Sigrun Sverrisdottir snared third in 9:05.20.

Rachel Ripley dominated the women's 200 breast in 2:33.10 to clear the Olympic Trials cut in the event. Emily Dibenigno took second in 2:37.59, while Rec Plex's Abby Hempen wound up third in 2:38.35. Ben Bravence topped the men's 800 free in 8:23.02, while Rockwood's Nicholas Davis placed second in 8:26.78. KC Blazer James Foster finished third in 8:27.37.

Kansas' Mari Mayrovich claimed the women's 100 free title in 57.57, while Columbia's Kim Jasmer took second in 57.68. Rockwood's Lauren Votava rounded out the top three in 57.74. Tsunami's Matt Margritier won the men's 100 free in 52.48, while Greater Omaha's Will Schuermann touched secon din 52.61. Kansas City Blazer Ben Scheffer picked up third in 52.67.

Razorback's Elizabeth Braun (2:15.45) and KC Blazer Haley Smith (2:17.36) went 1-2 in the women's 200 back under the Olympic Trials cut. Topeka's Sammie Schurig finished third in 2:18.32. John Higgins captured the men's 200 back in 2:04.81, while Scheffer earned his second podium of the night with a second-place 2:04.85. Arkansas Dolphin Ravi Sun placed third in 2:07.46.
