Russia’s Anastasia Chaun Withdraws from World Championships

SHANGHAI, China, July 20. THE Russian Swimming Federation announced today that breaststroker Anastasia Chaun has withdrawn from the FINA World Championships.

Chaun, who is currently ranked 15th in the world in the women's 200 breaststroke, pulled out of Worlds because of health issues arising from an anti-doping test on July 11. The Russian federation has stated that Chaun sustained a local thrombophlebitis in her shoulder. A thrombophlebitis is essentially the swelling caused in a vein by a blood clot.

The Russian federation also announced an investigation into the cause of the blood clot, and how it occurred due to a drug test. Many top-level sports politicians are also part of the announcements by Russia, claiming that the country needs to make sure something similar does not happen again.

Chaun, a 2010 European champion in the breaststroke, was expected to make a run at the podium for Russia.
