PHOENIX, Arizona, July 15. LAURE Manaudou made her return to competition last night at a USA Swimming sectional meet at the University of Georgia. The Olympic champ in the 400 free in 2004, Manaudou swam the 50 free, yes, the 50 free, and placed second to Megan Romano with a lifetime best time of 25.84. Manaudou has said she wants to challenge for the gold medal in the 200 free at next year's Olympics, and we'll see what shape she's in for that event when she swims it today, and we'll have a recap of the meet each night on swimmingworld.com.

The FINA world championships begins tomorrow in Shanghai, China with finals in the women's three-meter synchro diving event and prelims in the men's one-meter individual event. Cassidy Cook and Kristina Loukas will compete for the USA in the synchro three-meter, and Chris Colwill and Aaron Fleshner will dive in the men's 1-meter event. The three-meter synchro event will end around 6 a.m. Eastern time, and we'll have results for you on swimmingworld.com.

Women's water polo begins preliminary play on Sunday, with the USA, the reigning world champions, up against the Netherlands in the opening game, which will begin at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday evening. Men's water polo starts Monday in Shangai, with the US playing Germany around 6 a.m.

At their meeting earlier today, FINA voted to give the 2015 world championships to Kazan, Russia, which will be the first time a world championships is held in that country. The Russian delegation had two swimming legends behind it: Olympic champions Vladimir Salnikov and Alexander Popov. Salnikov, who you can see in this photo on the right, is the president of the Russian swimming federation and Popov is a member of the International Olympic Committee's board. Gudalajara won the bid for the 2017 worlds. Mexico hasn't had a major swimming championships since the 1968, though Guadalajara is the host of this fall's Pan American Games and has built a competition pool that looks to be fast, so congratulations to Kazan and Guadalajara.
