Canada Cup: Michael Phelps Blazes 100 Fly, Posts World Best

MONTREAL, Canada, July 3. NORTH Baltimore's Michael Phelps fired one more salvo before heading into final preparations for the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai. Phelps clocked a top-ranked effort in this men's 100 fly during the final night of swimming at the Canada Cup this evening.

Phelps threw down the top swim in the world in the men's 100 fly with a blazing time of 51.32. That effort eclipsed the previous bellwether mark of 51.65 held by Benjamin Starke since last month. It also bettered Phelps's previously second-ranked season best of 51.75 clocked in March. Chris Brady placed second tonight in 52.77 to move to 17th in the world, while Wu Peng wound up third in 53.31.

Katerine Savard won the women's 100 fly in 58.68, off her 10th-ranked season best of 57.97 from March. Kendra Chernoff took second in 1:00.63, while Sandrine Mainville took third in 1:00.81.

Matthew Swanston captured the men's 50 back in 26.64, while Matt Patton took second in 26.67. Jeffrey Swanston finished third in 27.10. Gabrielle Soucisse snagged the women's 50 back crown in 29.77. Virginia Glover (30.10) and Jennifer Beckberger (30.13) completed the top three.

Scott Dickens posted a 2:15.70 to claim the men's 200 breast. Ashton Baumann took second in 2:17.83, while Warren Barnes earned third in 2:18.14. Ashley McGregor touched out Tera Van Beilen, 2:31.29 to 2:31.38, for the women's 200 breast title. Haylee Johnson garnered third in 2:33.57.

Brent Hayden won the men's 50 free in 22.59, while Bobby Savulich took second in 23.18. Miguel Ortiz finished third in 23.27. Ann Fittin topped the women's 50 free in 25.61, while Victoria Poon took second in 25.65. Sandrine Mainville placed third in 25.86.

In relay action, Pascal-Hugo Cantin, Eric Cantin, Benjamin Le Maguet and Adam Szoo won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:56.02. Samantha Cheverton, Caroline Kuczynski, Ashley McGregor and Alyson Ackman claimed the women's 400 medley relay in 4:13.76.
