USA Swimming Names 2011-12 Open Water National Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, June 29. USA Swimming today announced the swimmers named to its 2011-2012 USA Swimming Open Water National Team and its 2011-2012 Open Water National Junior Team. A total of 12 open water swimmers, including six men and six women were named to the National Team , which includes current 10K National Champions Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.).

Swimmers were selected for the USA Swimming Open Water National Team based upon their finish at the 2011 USA Swimming 10K Open Water National Championships that took place June 10 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. The top six finishers that finished within 10 minutes of the first-place finisher were named to the team.

Additional open water standouts named to the National Team include Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.), Sean Ryan (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Ashley Twichell (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Andrew Gemmell (Wilmington, Del.).

Only select members from the 2011-2012 Open Water National Team will represent the U.S. at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai. The roster can be found online here.

Six swimmers, three men and three women, were also selected as part of the 2011-2012 Open Water National Junior Team. The top three finishers at the 2011 USA Swimming 10K Open Water National Championship, who were 18 and under and at the time of the event, qualified for the Junior National Team. All team members must have also finished within 15 minutes of the first place finisher and may not have previously been on a higher ranked National Team.

Benefits offered to USA Swimming National Team members include reimbursement for travel to USA Swimming Grand Prix meets and training camp opportunities. Select athletes are eligible for monthly assistance and Elite Athlete Health Insurance. In addition to the announcement of the Open Water National Team and Open Water National Junior Team, USA Swimming has also named the head open water coaches for the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China and the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China. Jack Fabian will lead the women and Tim Murphy will coach the men in Shanghai, while Josh White will serve as the open water head coach in Shenzhen.
