Greensboro Aquatic Center Chosen at Host of the 2012 YMCA National Short Course Championships

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, June 19. YMCA of the USA and the National Site Selection Team selected Greensboro in large part due to the significant community support evidenced during the site visit, the quality and capacity of its event site, the enthusiastic support demonstrated by the Greater Greensboro YMCA and a community history of providing quality sporting event experiences to participants in previous hosting opportunities.

In August, the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC), the newest state of the art Aquatic Center in the country, will officially open. The GAC's already well received design has resulted in the GAC being awarded the 2012 United States Masters Spring National Championships and 17 other state and regional Swimming & Diving Meets.

The GAC was purposely designed and located on the Greensboro Coliseum Complex campus and built adjacent to the Coliseum Complex's Special Events Center (SEC). The SEC, a 167,000 square foot

Exhibition Hall/Conference Center, provides Y Nationals additional space for event opportunities now in the planning stages. In addition, the new ACC Hall of Champions museum is located on the campus and will be open to our event.

Jim Weaton, National Director of Events for YMCA of the USA stated that "with this selection, we are excited and confident that Greensboro will make this an extraordinary event for our YMCA athletes, their families and friends. We look forward to celebrating the very best in YMCA swimming in this new, state-of-the-art venue. Our YMCA young people have worked very hard and their families have made significant sacrifices to see them develop and reach this level. We owe it to all of them to make this an experience, both in and out of the pool that will be remembered for a lifetime. We believe we have found such a place in Greensboro NC."

Over the coming months, additional information will be posted to the site as it becomes available. We look forward to welcoming you to the great city of Greensboro in April of 2012 and the next National YMCA Short Course Championship. It promises to be an event you won't want to miss. And thank you for your patience as we moved through the process of site selection. We ALL believe we found the ‘RIGHT FIT'.
