Santa Clara International Invitational: Ryan Cochrane Downs Meet Record During Distance Evening

SANTA CLARA, California, June 16. THE Santa Clara International Invitational kicked off with long course meter distance freestyle competition.

Canada's Ryan Cochrane shot down the men's 800 free meet record with a victorious time of 7:52.18. That effort cleared the 7:53.56 set by Chad La Tourette back in 2009, and pushed Cochrane to fourth in the world rankings in the event. Sun Yang (7:44.12), Samuel Pizzetti (7:49.79) and Job Kienhuis (7:51.92) are the only men faster than Cochrane in the 800 free so far this year. Peter Vanderkaay, swimming for OLY, touched second in 8:00.87 to move to 24th in the world rankings. Australia's Ryan Napolean placed third in 8:08.11, well back of his seventh-ranked season best of 7:55.20 from April.

North Baltimore's Camryne Morris, 16, captured the women's 1500 free title in 16:30.98, while Boulder's Amanda Richey, 15, earned second in 16:58.15. Catherine Breed completed the top three in the distance event with a time of 16:59.10.
