German World Championship Trials: Marco Di Carli Posts German Record, World Best

BERLIN, Germany, June 4. MARCO Di Carli downed the German record in the men's 100 free en route to ascending to the top of the world rankings during day five of the German World Championship Trials. The meet is taking place in long course meters format.

Di Carli ripped off a 48.24 to clip Paul Biedermann's previous national record of 48.39 set at the 2009 World Championships. Di Carli also eclipsed the previous bellwether mark this year of 48.29 set by James Magnussen of Australia in April. Fabien Gilot had been the fastest European this year with a now third-ranked 48.34 in March. Biedermann placed second tonight in 48.66 to move into a ninth place tie with Matt Targett and Cesar Cielo. Markus Deibler completed the podium with a 49.11.

Britta Steffen continued on the comeback trail with a sixth-ranked 54.14 to win the women's 100 free. Daniela Schreiber finished second in 54.74 to rank 25th overall. Lisa Vitting wound up third in 55.19.

Christian Vom Lehn moved up to ninth in the rankings with a triumphant 1:00.51 in the men's 100 breast. Hendrik Feldwehr touched second in 1:00.68 for 11th, while Johannes Neumann hit the wall in 1:01.94 for third tonight.

Yannick Lebherz jumped to 10th in the world rankings in the men's 200 back with a winning 1:58.00. Jan-Philip Glania placed second in 1:58.46 to move to 14th, while Lucian Hasdenteufel earned third in 1:59.89.

Jenny Mensing won the women's 200 back in 2:10.21 for 20th in the world rankings, while Lisa Graf placed second in 2:14.27. Paula Beyer rounded out the top three in 2:15.63.

Sarah Poewe snared the women's 100 breast title in 1:08.69. Caroline Ruhnau finished second in 1:09.44, while Vanessa Grimberg earned third in 1:09.79. Kathrin Demler grabbed the women's 1500 free crown in 17:11.63. Lena-Sophie Bermel (17:19.02) and Tina Appelt (17:25.49) completed the podium.

Tim Wallburger won the men's 200 fly in 1:58.22, while Toni Embacher took second in 2:00.71. Simon Becker snagged third in 2:01.80. Franziska Hentke captured the women's 200 fly in 2:10.79. Lena Kalla touched a distant second in 2:13.87, while Katharine Schiller picked up third in 2:14.04.

In relay action, Thomas Rueter, Hendrik Feldwehr, Jan David Schepers and Jan Konopka won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:42.19, while Deborah Gonschorek, Julia Willers, Theresa Michalak and Daniela Schreiber topped the women's 400 medley relay in 4:11.81.
