Australia Women’s Water Polo Downs Greece, 14-11, in Kirishi Cup

KIRISHI, Russia, June 1. LED by four goals from dual Olympian Kate Gynther and three from London 2012 hopeful Ashleigh Southern the Australians battled hard against some puzzling refereeing calls in defence to snare the victory.

In a good sign for their chances in this month's FINA World League finals and July's FINA World Championships, the Stingers remain unbeaten in 13 internationals this year and have won ten of their last 11 Tests.

Australian coach Greg McFadden said it was a good win considering the 38-hour flight to get to Kirishi over the weekend and the hard fought game against the USA the previous night.

"I'm happy with the win after the hard game last night and a solid training session this morning because the girls are (now) a little fatigued," McFadden said.

Driver Jane Moran agreed it was a solid win in preparation for the World Championships.

"Unfortunately we let Greece score more goals than we had planned to because we didn't contain their main shooters but it was good to get the win," Moran said.

"Our main aim is to win every game here in Kirishi and use the competition as strong training and preparation for the World Championships in Shanghai."

Despite being pleased with the win McFadden was miffed with the refereeing of the centre back area with his side caned by exclusions.

"What is frustrating is adapting to the fouls attributed to our centre backs by the referees," McFadden mused.

"Last night against the best team in the world and against some of the world's best centre forwards, we attracted only seven exclusions in centre back.

"But tonight against the Greek centre forwards the referees ejected our centre backs 14 times.

"It would be great to have consistent understanding of what constitutes appropriate play by the centre forward and centre back across games."

Australia's next match is late tonight (AEST) against the dangerous host team Russia.
