AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix: Day Two

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, May 6. THREE more Americans have advanced to the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix finals after day two of competition at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex.

David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind./West Lafayette, Ind.) and Nick McCrory (Chapel Hill, N.C./Durham, N.C.) both advanced to Sunday's men's 10-meter finals, and Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill./Minneapolis, Minn.) qualified for the women's 3-meter final. All three also earned spots on this summer's World Championships team, as did Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill./The Woodlands, Texas).

Boudia won the men's 10-meter prelims with 529.15 points and then improved his score in the semis with 554.10, the highest score by any diver in either semifinal.

"In the prelims, I was just expecting to land on my head and stay consistent and get on the world team," Boudia said. "It was great to see Nick make finals too. I'm excited about where we're at, and I'm ready for Sunday."

China's Qiu Bo won the other semifinal with 550.95 points, followed by McCrory at 439.35 and China's Huo Liang third at 422.40. Also advancing from Boudia's semifinal were Ukraine's Oleksandr Bondar (492.40) and Australia's Matthew Mitcham (474.90).

"It was a successful day. I was a little nervous going into prelims, but I qualified for the world team and made finals even though semis was a little rough," McCrory said.

USA's Thomas Finchum (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored 422.85 for 13th, and Toby Stanley (Conway, Ark./Indianapolis, Ind.) was 14th at 420.05.

In women's 3-meter, Bryant turned in the top score in semifinal A with 333.90 points to advance to Sunday's final. Also advancing from Bryant's semifinal were Ukraine's Olena Fedorova (323.50) and Japan's Sayaka Shibusawa (295.60).

"It's really exciting to do what I've been training all year to do," Bryant said.

Advancing from semifinal B are China's He Zi (379.05); Mexico's Laura Sanchez (333.75) and Russia's Anastasia Pozdniakova (321.70). Loukas placed fifth with 306.80 points.

Abby Johnston (Upper Arlington, Ohio/Durham, N.C.) placed fifth in the 3-meter preliminaries but only two divers per country can advance to the semifinals, so did not advance as Bryant and Loukas were second and third in prelims. Kassidy Cook (The Woodlands, Texas) also competed and finished 14th with 278.10 points.

The AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix continues through Sunday. Saturday's competition features finals in men's 3-meter and women's 10-meter, with both individual and synchronized events being contested.
